Bananas come in plastic bags and for the longest time I thought this was no big deal. But I have recently learned that fruits give off a gas called ethylene which breaks down cell tissue causing faster ripening times. When bananas are stored in their plastic bags, they ripen faster because the plastic bags trap the ethylene, thereby causing the bananas to develop brown spotsĀ and go mushy and have those long yellow veins that stick to the banana when you peel it.
The same goes for when fruit is stored near other fruit in a container, the ethylene will cause an apple in a bag with a banana to ripen faster. The best thing to do to preserve fruit is to allow its ethylene to disperse into the atmosphere by placing it in a bowl on your counter. This is also aesthetically pleasing because the different fruity colors mingle and reflect in the eye as a sign of decorative taste.
So next time you buy bananas, think about how fast you want them to ripen and either keep them in their polyethylene bag if they’re too green, or store them in a bowl with the apples and pears and oranges and pineapple and mangoes and papaya and pomegranate.
