Plastic Bags: The Materials of Our Lives
Do you have a bag or anything I can put this in?
If I had a dollar for every time I’ve asked that. Because sometimes you just need a bag. You can’t carry it any more in your hands – you need poly bags. They are surprisingly strong, considering they weigh about as much as feathers. And they come in so many varieties and are made to hold the most exotic items, from red snapper to computers. Newspaper bags, plastic envelopes, you name it – whatever you want to hold in plastic bags, you can.
The convenience of plastic is important to note. For with it, we have been able to revolutionize the world. Consumerism and the full flowering of capitalism would not have been possible without it.
And even if the plastic poly bags you carry your groceries in are going out of style, it will still be a long time before they figure out a way to wrap all of our snack packages in a different material. Or rather an altered material. For example, Coke’s Odwalla drinks use high-density polyethylene plastic made of plant materials. How is the subject for another blog post. But the fact is we’re making plastic naturally, which is pretty cool.
