A proposal to ban poly bags in grocery stores, convenience stores, and drugstores has been rejected by the California Senate. The legislation was passed the California Assembly in June and was rejected by a 21 to 14 vote last Tuesday. What does this all mean? Well, it means that even one of the most environmentally aware and concerned states in the United States disagrees with the banning of poly bags.
Assemblywoman Julia Brownley who proposed the bill was criticized by The American Chemistry Council asserting that her legislation is “…bad for the economy and bad for the environment: It will eliminate several hundred California manufacturing jobs and dismantle existing plastic bag recycling programs.”
The chemistry council represents companies that make products of modern life possible while also working to protect the environment, public health, and the security of the nation. And in this case, it includes poly bags.
Poly bags have become so essential to daily American life, that they really can’t be taken away. The material polythene can be found in almost everything; to ban something as commonly used as poly bags would reverse the technological and scientific advances that we’ve made thus far throughout history.
