Dog Lovers = Plastic Bag Lovers
Any dog owner in New York City knows the value of plastic bags. And any non-dog owning New Yorker appreciates the value of dog owners who value plastic bags.
Maybe it’s funny to broach this somewhat indelicate subject here in blog-land, but the fact is, we love the canine citizens of our city only so long as our shoes don’t run into something the dog’s left on the sidewalk.
I don’t have a dog, myself, and I’m delighted to come across one of any size when jogging through the park or walking down the block. Classic poodles, American Eskimos, Chihuahuas, Great Danes, Labs, Shih Tzus, Daschunds, Mutts–you name it, I’ll bend down to say hello. If there’s bacon in my pocket, I’ll hand it over happily. But if the person on the other end of the leash isn’t carrying a plastic bag, I’ll admit, I bristle.
Fido can’t clean up after himself, and the sign of a responsible pet owner is a couple of happy little plastic bags that lets us know any mess will be cleaned up after before it’s a problem for anyone else. I want to see Fido cared for responsibly, and I don’t want an unwelcome stinky substance on my sneakers.
That’s why I don’t live in Paris, non?
