Poly Mailers, Newspaper Bags, Header Bags, Plastic Bags and more!
For the record, I love this song. I find the beat hilarious, the lyrics witty and clever, and the repetitive chorus shockingly catchy. And who doesn’t love a good Australian accent?
However, I have heard friends of mine use the words “inspiring” when listening to this song bashing plastic bags, and as much as I enjoy it, I think that’s a little much. I mean, this isn’t Martin Luther King we’re talking about. It’s not even Al Gore. It’s written by Tim Minchin, an Australian musical comedian who also wrote and performs a song called “My Neighbors Ass.” So forgive me if I’m not looking to Minchin to point my moral compass in the right direction.
The fact is, yes, getting a plethora of plastic bags every time you make the trip to the supermarket can be wasteful… just like getting a plethora of anything and using it just once is wasteful. However, some community curbside recycling programs have begun accepting plastic grocery bags. They’re just as re-usable as old newspapers and aluminum cans!
Additionally, a majority of grocery stores have recycling bins inside the store for Type 2 and Type 4 plastic grocery bags. So instead of lugging a canvas bag every time you go to the supermarket (which can be a bother, as sometimes you won’t have enough bag space to handle all your groceries), you can just bring your old plastic bags back and have them recycled for you.
So, while Minchin wants us to “rid the world of plastic,” the truth is we just need to be wiser about what we do with them after we’re done with our groceries.
